Elaboration of land use, climate and soil properties based greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors for drainage ditches in grassland, cropland and forest land

The aim of the study is to elaborate country specific GHG emission factors for drainage ditches in organic soils considering land use, soil properties and climate conditions and remote sensing based methodology for elaboration of accounting and projections of GHG emissions from ditches.

In Latvia and neighboring countries organic soils is major source of GHG emissions; however, the reporting of GHG emissions from organic soils including drainage ditches is still based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2014 default emission factors. Limited knowledge, lack of country specific emission factors and high uncertainty of the GHG estimates is blocking implementation of the climate change mitigation measures and adaptation of management of organic soils to changing climate conditions. The aim of the project will be reached by synthesis of knowledge recently acquired in the Baltic region on GHG fluxes in organic soils and acquisition of field measurement data on GHG fluxes.

The main project actions are:

  1. Literature analysis and development of research framework;
  2. Establishment of study sites and measurement infrastructure;
  3. Measurements of GHG emissions, soil properties and climate conditions;
  4. Data analysis and scientific reporting.
