Leader: Guntars Šņepsts
Start date: 28.4.2020
End date: 30.12.2020

The aim of the research: to develop proposals for increasing the value and management efficiency of forest resources and improvement of the regulatory environment, to provide support for the strategic environmental impact assessment of forest management. To carry out FAO FRA forest monitoring assessment of 500 Latvian plots, evaluating changes in forest areas since 2000.

Main tasks:

  1. To improve LSFRI Silava forest resource modelling system:
1.1. supplement with the latest forest growth model equations,
1.2. include a simulation of large scale natural disturbances in the simulation model of natural disturbance,
1.3. to improve the assortment model by supplementing with the general heights and tree curves developed during the study, including correction of the outcome of the assortment of wood faults on the basis of historical assortment data,
1.4. to improve the growth rate simulation model with the results obtained during the study regarding changes in the growth rate after renovation and reconstruction of drainage system.
  2. To model business as usual and targeted forest management impact on changes in forest resources until 2120. Prepare proposals to increase the efficiency and value of forest resource management.
  3. Assessment of forest monitoring FAO FRA in  500 sample plots in Latvia, characterising forest changes from 2000 to 2018.
