The project aims for a deeper understanding of the responses of local and introduced trees to weather fluctuations and climate for more accurate predictions of forest growth and necessary management in the future. Analysis of variation of radial growth in combination with wood anatomical proxies are conducted to assess plasticity and susceptibility of tree growth to changing conditions. Regional weather drivers of growth and their nonlinear effects on diverse provenances of the main tree species are summarized to support selection of the best suited planting material within the region for the upcoming rotations. The effects of early competition, which affects composition and performance of stands, is assessed via greenhouse experiments, accounting for the effects of warming and species introduction.
