Award ceremony for the “Women in Science Baltic Fellowships 2026” laureates took place on October 1, 2026 at the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

The ceremony brought together representatives of the scientific and educational communities of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to honour this year’s scholarship recipients and recognise their contributions to science. The Baltic Scholarship for Women in Science competition is jointly organised by the academies of sciences and national commissions for UNESCO in the three Baltic States. The programme aims to raise the visibility of women scientists, promote gender equality in science and inspire future generations of researchers.

Among the three Latvian scientists awarded the “Women in Science Baltic Fellowships 2026” this year is Dr. Arta Bārdule, Senior Researcher at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, who holds a doctorate in chemistry.

Arta Bārdule received the scholarship for her research evaluating the impact of reducing tillage intensity in organic-matter-rich agricultural soils on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The study will enable an in-depth analysis of the relationship between soil management practices and GHG emissions, thereby expanding knowledge of ways to reduce the impact of agriculture on the climate.

The Latvian scientists were congratulated at the ceremony by Ivars Kalviņš, President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and Dace Resele, Secretary-General of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO.

The scholarship provides women scientists with an opportunity to continue their research, develop new ideas and carry out the one-year research projects outlined in their applications. At the same time, it promotes women’s participation in science and supports the development of science across the Baltic region.
