From June 16 to 20, the annual seminar of the EuFoRIa Research Network took place at the University of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The event brought together 35 participants from 19 countries, including Researcher of LSFRI 'Silava', Laura Ķēniņa and Research assistant Valters Samariks.
The Seminar focused on the latest research on old-growth forests, opportunities for developing the network, international cooperation and the development of joint research projects. Scientists presented studies on climate reconstruction, the use of remote sensing technologies and the role of deadwood in the carbon cycle.
During the seminar, Laura Ķēniņa presented the paper "Introduction to the primary forest plots in hemiboreal Latvia”, introducing the network of old-growth forest research plots established by LSFRI 'Silava' in Latvia and presenting findings on carbon stocks obtained through the research.
The Seminar also provided an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation. Work continued on a scientific manuscript as part of the postdoctoral research project Assessment of structural dynamics and biodiversity composition of hemiboreal old-growth forests to advance closer-to-nature management, and agreements were reached on further cooperation with researchers from the Czech Republic and Romania.
At the end of the seminar, participants visited one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's old-growth forests, gaining insights into forest management practices in the country.
